About Jeseníky National Nature Reserve

Located in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic, Jeseníky National Nature Reserve safeguards the central Hrubý Jeseník mountains. Covering high mountain ridges and deep valleys, it features the second highest peak in the country, Praděd (1,491 meters). The reserve's landscape includes dense spruce and beech forests, peat bogs, and alpine meadows, creating a habitat for many rare and endemic plant species, including the Carpathian bellflower and the mountain azalea. This area is a refuge for diverse wildlife such as marmots, lynx, and capercaillie, making it a hotspot for animal watchers. Historically, the region was shaped by glacial and volcanic activity, and centuries of traditional forestry and mountain farming continue to influence its ecosystems. Visitors are attracted to the reserve for its extensive trail network that offers varied hiking opportunities, from gentle nature walks to challenging summit climbs. Winter transforms the region into a snow sports destination, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing popular throughout the reserve. Key landmarks include the observation tower on Praděd, which provides panoramic views, and the Rychlebské Mountains eco-trails that highlight natural and cultural features. The Jeseníky National Nature Reserve remains popular for its relatively untouched environment and opportunities to experience Central European mountain wilderness.
